‘Little Mermaid’ has sprawling cast
Elizabeth High School’s spring musical may be called “The Little Mermaid,” but the production is anything but little.

With 44 students in the cast and around 14 in the student tech crew, the stage and outlying areas of the cafetorium are packed with actors, directors, costumes and scenery.

Performing arts teacher Jennifer Barclay is striving to produce a show that will enrich the students’ experiences while at the same time handing the logistics of an actual theater production. For Barclay, the process involves a lot of time and patience.

Alternative school offers different paths to success
Since its inception in 1995, Frontier Alternative High School in Elizabeth has served to cultivate success for students who might have otherwise slipped through the cracks.

“We see kids who just couldn’t find their place in traditional schools … there may be anxiety, failed classes,” said Robert McMullen, the principal at Frontier.

Cardinals take third at state
Elizabeth fans cheered and applauded and teammates shouted encouragement whenever Cardinals athletes prepared to compete during the Nov. 4 Class 4A State Gymnastics Championship Meet.

Gymnastics involves competition in four events: the uneven parallel bars, the vault, the balance beam and floor exercise.

Meets are both an individual and a team competition. Individual gymnasts seek to win each event in which they compete. At the same time, they earn team points based on their individual scores. A team can enter eight gymnasts in an event and the sum of the top five scores are added together to determine the team score for that event.

Cardinals conclude sweet season
Elizabeth players shared hugs, shed a few tears and their faces reflected the disappointment of not being able to keep the season going after a 6-3 loss to Air Academy in the Oct. 21 first round of the Class 4A state softball playoffs at Aurora Sports Park.
