Superintendent Douglas Bissonette

Douglas Bissonette was appointed superintendent in August of 2009. In addition to eleven years as a Colorado superintendent, Mr. Bissonette has over two decades of experience in education at the university level, in the corporate world, and abroad.

Before becoming superintendent in Elizabeth, Mr. Bissonette led a small, rural school district to become one of Colorado’s top performers. During his six years as superintendent in Ridgway, he led efforts to attract and retain high quality educators, broaden the scope and improve the quality of the curriculum, and introduce innovative programs for students, including individual learning plans for every student. Mr. Bissonette has served in leadership roles on numerous boards, foundations and councils throughout the state.

Prior to entering public education, Mr. Bissonette spent seven years teaching at two highly regarded private schools in Madrid, Spain. His wife is from Spain, two of their three children were born there, and he and his family are bilingual.

Mr. Bissonette spent more than a decade at an award-wining corporate education firm known for its innovations in redesigning business learning. As Vice President, he had leadership responsibilities in the areas of strategic direction, client relations, fiscal management, and course design and development. Mr. Bissonette was also part of the instructional teams that delivered customized courses to recent college graduates through top executives at Fortune 500 companies. Clients included General Electric, Citibank, Boston Consulting Group, Ernst & Young, Harvard Business School, Polaroid, Chase Manhattan Bank, and Aetna Insurance.

Mr. Bissonette started his career at Boston University where he coordinated orientation and intercultural programs for over 3,500 international students from over 100 countries. Raised in the Napa Valley, after two years as an Enology major at University of California, Davis, Mr. Bissonette decided not to join the family wine business and instead decided to pursue a career as an educator.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Managerial Economics from UC, Davis, and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Boston University. Mr. Bissonette also completed the Management Development Program at Boston University School of Management, and the Executive Leadership Program at the University of Colorado, Denver. He holds a Superintendent License issued by the Colorado Department of Education.
